BRANDING

After I gave birth to my first kid I naively assumed that I would be able to find a new graphic design job within six months postpartum. When that didn’t happen, I eventually decided that if no one would hire me then I’d have to hire myself. In 2017, I started my own company.

What began as a journey inspired by The Golden Girls expanded to celebrate pop culture references and nods to relatable human experiences with one goal in mind for customers: to really lean into their idiosyncrasies, many of which can be expressed through Heck Yes, Y’all’s designed and handmade apparel.

Logo design

I knew that I wanted the HYY brand to embody the vibe that I feel is most authentic for me which is no frills or attempts to be anything other that what I am. In other words: openly and unapologetically candid.

I knew I wanted an accent font for the logo and product design. For this I chose Cooper Std Black as well as Black Italic as it is well recognized but not terribly distracting.

I also chose a sans serif for larger blocks of type and the tagline for the logo. I wanted to choose one that was easily visually digestible, clear and relatively benign. For this, I chose Century Gothic Regular.

As Heck Yes, Y’all LLC has evolved, colors and typefaces have been added for refreshed product options. However, the foundation remains unchanged.

Products

Golden Girls + pop culture inspired references I noticed that the options for GG tees or “merch” of any kind were pretty stuck with the same five phrases, and I decided that needed to change. Additionally, whether it’s The Office, VEEP or Teen Witch, there are just too many fantastic references for us to keep it in our streaming devices.

Mental health & relatable moods Let’s just get it all out there.

Handmade collar pins Reincarnated from vintage earrings these make great statement pieces on collared shirts, dresses or a cardigans.

Social Media Presence

Conventions + Artisan Fairs

I’ve been to countless craft fairs and always thought the vendors had some sort of limitless talent and guts to be able to sell their products in such a public setting.

So the first time I was accepted as a vendor at the Spring BUST Craftacular in 2018 I almost lost my mind.

I’d applied assuming that I’d be rejected but I was okay with that; my goal was solely to work up the courage to apply, and that was enough for me.

Then I was accepted.

It turns out that there’s no magic password or society that is guaranteed these opportunities. If you make something and it’s a decent product, you can do it too.

Prior to re-branding the company to Heck Yes, Y’all LLC, SassyGreenLady LLC was the official name for the company. The main product focus was apparel and accessories inspired by the Golden Girls. With time, the desire to expand to more pop culture references grew as well as to create products with purely positive messaging. At that point, Heck Yes, Y’all LLC was born.

SGL began as a shop on Etsy and remained there through the re-brand and a few years after. That aside, social media provided the best way to connect with fellow Golden Girls fans. These are a couple examples of Instagram story graphics.
